Referee John Phiri and his Assistants have the Police and Stewards to thank after irate fans-believed to have been behind Blantyre
United-threatened to manahandle the officiating personnel at a Super League match played at MDC Stadium on Saturday.
The ugly scenes started immediately after Tigers scored the third goal in the added time to force the game into a 3-3 draw.
Phiri who added six minutes after the 90 minutes of regulatioin time was accused of favouring Tigers.
It is allerged that there was a hand ball by a Tigers players inside Blantyre United penalty area before substitute Frazer Menyani slotted
home the equalizer.
As soon as the referee blew the final whistle, the fans kept on booing and verbally abused the officiating team as they made their way to the tunnel under police escort.
Police had to use teargas to disburse the angry fans.
In his reacton after the match, Blantyre United Care Taker Coach Safarao Pompi hailed his charges for the garand fight but blamed the
referee for poor decisions particularly late in the second half.
“We played very well and there was a great improvement from our previous games but the referee spoiled everything. He did a good jon
in the first half and early second half but towards the end of the match, it was total mess” said Pompi.
His counterpart Patricio Kulemeka described the game as difficult.
He however noted that there are some problems he needs to rectify.
“It wasn’t an easy game but we also have to blame ourselves. We got relaxed and ended up giving away the lead twice. I have noticed few
problems that we need to work on once we go back to training” said Kulemeka.
Azam Tigers have so far played six games and managed to collect eight points while Blantyre United seats on position 12 with six points from six games.
