The Karonga Youths for Justice and Development (KYJD), one of the leading local Non Governmental Organization (NGO) in Karonga petitioned the district hospital over the weekend for charging health services to patients.Led by KYJD executive director Steven Simsokwe, the group has threatened to protest if the hospital continues charging health services.
“We demand your explanation on why the hospital charges the services which are supposed to be free,” reads the petition.
The organization claimed to have been receiving number of complaints from the community.
“After receiving number of complaints from the concerned community, as KYJD we conducted our own investigation and found that the allegation was true,” said Simsokwe.
Karonga district Health Advisory Committee (HAC) Felix Mwankyanjala admitted to have such kind of malpractice at the hospital.
“We are also in the process to curb this problem, some patients are also failing to go to the hospital for fear of this, in short it is not something to deny,” said Mwankyanjala.
However, Karonga district hospital through the acting District Health Officer Luis Tukula admitted to have received the petition.
He said he is aware about that rumors but he is yet to receive official complaint from the concerned patients.
Meanwhile, Tukula said the hospital is planning to meet with the organization on the matter while asking the patients to directly report the matter to his office.
