Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Kondwani Nankhumwa has warned chiefs to refrain from abuse of power and corrupt practices in various development projects set by government.
He said this Thursday during the elevation ceremony of Traditional Authority Thondo to a Senior Traditional Authority at Kafuta Primary school in Ntchisi.
The Minister said some chiefs take their power as an advantage to abuse others.
He said it is sad to mistreat other people because of an increase in authority and he advised Senior Chief Thondo to work positively with everyone.
“We are here today to elevate Senior Chief Thondo but I understand that there might be others who are not happy with this chieftainship. I want to advise you to work with everyone in ensuring that your area develops instead of quarrelling among yourselves. Make sure that you maintain your good works which have led to your elevation to a senior position,” he said.
The Minister bemoaned the tendency of other chiefs who do not participate in various development activities implemented by government.
He said some chiefs intentionally increase the number of beneficiaries for Public Works Programme to pocket the difference where a person gets K600 per day.
“If some of those chiefs are here I want to discourage you from that malpractice as government will take an action on you if found,” Nankhumwa said.
Member of Parliament for the area, Olipa Chimangeni appreciated government’s consideration to elevate Senior Chief Thondo saying it was long overdue.
She said this shows that government considers its people and is satisfied with Senior Chief Thondo’s works in the area.
